When people hear of experiencing psychological trauma, they usually associate this experience to survivors of natural disasters and combat soldiers who were exposed to a sudden and earth shattering consequence and or recently witnessing a traumatic death. According to Wikipedia, “trauma is a result of an overwhelming amount of stress that exceeds one’s ability to cope, or integrate the emotions involved with that experience.”

Trauma has been known to be evident with frontline workers who experience people in extremely distressful situations such as police, firefighters, paramedics, doctors and nurses. Multiple exposures to traumatic events (death, threat of death or serious injury) can accumulate overtime and may result in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD symptoms can include having nightmares, flashbacks or thoughts of the event. It can cause someone to be irritable, having difficulty concentrating, difficulties with sleeping and excessively worrying.

Although, frontline workers, survivors of natural disasters and combat soldiers are likely to experience PTSD. Yet, others can experience trauma too, this includes people who have experience abuse (physical, sexual, emotional, mental and spiritual abuse). Trauma can take different forms: school-yard bullying, workplace bullying or being sexually harassed by a colleague. Trauma can have detrimental impacts on a person’s sense of well-being and security.

For a person who has experienced trauma, this person requires healing because this person’s health has been impacted by a life-altering circumstance. If it is left untreated, it can leave a detrimental scar in a person’s self-esteem and it would impact his/her interactions with others.
